Rivera says he’s good to go
By Andrew Marchand, ESPNNewYork.com
Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera, who has been sidelined by stiffness in his left side, can close, if needed. “I could go out there, but it is their decision,” Rivera told ESPNNewYork.com.
Girardi said he would prefer to be cautious, and give Rivera a longer break. “I really believe that Mo is available, but if I can, it is two more days,” Girardi said.
After finishing their three-game series against Baltimore (1:05 p.m. ET), the Yankees are playing 17 straight days, starting with a three-game series Friday in Boston.
Rivera added that the discomfort in his side “feels better,” and believes he could have pitched Tuesday night. “It wasn’t necessary,” Rivera said of the second consecutive day off.
On Tuesday, Joba Chamberlain became the first Yankees reliever not named Rivera to record consecutive saves since Juan Acevedo in 2003 and Mike Stanton in 1998. The Yankees won both games 4-1.
